About ICW
Why did we start ICW?
Our History
Intentional Communities of Washtenaw (ICW) began when a small group of Ann Arbor residents recognized the need to create independent living situations for their children and other individuals with developmental disabilities. The group knew that it would take a group of committed and dedicated parents.
ICW officially began in 2005 when 25 families met to make these housing options a reality for their loved ones. The group surveyed families who had children with disabilities to assess the needs and desires of these families. In short order, a mission statement and a steering committee were formed.
With the support of many individuals and organizations, ICW moved forward in 2008 to launce our independent living model in Ann Arbor, which continues to thrive today.
What makes ICW unique is that our resident members live independently within communities where ICW Community Builders also reside to support them as neighbors.
